I used Scrivener to try to organize a messed up almost-done manuscript. I know because I've written books using those other methods. Looking scenes over and moving them to rearrange, knowing which POV each scene is in, how long it is, etc., is going to make reorganizing the structure much easier than if it were one long WP document or if each chapter was a separate WP document. Right now I'm working on something where my chapters are all coming out much larger than I think ideal. One of the first things I took the time to learn was how to put in meta data for each scene so I can sort them for revisions like that easily. I had read enough threads on Scrivener here in KB to have a sense that it would make doing something like this easy, and it does. What I had to do to accomplish this in the word processing program (cut and pasted all his scenes into a new document, then copied the revised scenes back into the entire manuscript) was clumsy and aggravating. I wanted to see all his POV scenes one after the other. The book was written with scenes alternating between the hero and heroine's POV, and I wanted to be able to go through all the scenes in his POV, revise, and make sure they were logical and consistent after the revisions. At the time I had just struggled with revisions to a romance where all my beta readers wanted changes to the hero. īut again, they do not have a Mac version.Ĭlick to expand. It was Scrivener threads right here on KB that made me decide to try the free trial. Here is the link to their product page where you can see what features it provides and click to look at screen shots, etc You can also download a free 30 day trial. It also has publish-ready formats for Kindle, Nook, Kobo and smashwords. There is also the ability to color code scenes and flag scenes (for instance if you want to flag all the scenes you still need to complete, or flag all the scenes where a particular character appears, etc you can do that). You can also put in your writing goals (number of words per day, etc) and it will keep track of it. There is a button to go to the research section where you can include emails, links to sites, etc. You can build character backgrounds and get to the information by simply clicking the character button. It has note cards for plots, scenes, characters, etc. The only thing is they do not have a Mac version. I believe they are very similar in function and it is pretty simple to use and I think the same price. I always hear how difficult Scrivener is and that is why I chose to go with Writeway Pro.
